In 1956,
W.B. and Grace Simmons had an idea to build a camp in the upstate of
South Carolina. The idea was taken to the Greenville and North
Greenville Baptist Associations. A year later, the dream began to
become a reality. Then, two very difficult years of planning and building
took place.
In 1959,
the first camping season opened. Soon afterwards, the Greer
Association also came in on the ownership of the camp, forming the
tri-associational ministry.
In
addition to summer camp, the facility is used year-round for retreats and
conferences.
The
idea that became a dream come true has seen people from the entire state
of South Carolina and its neighboring states as well. Today, the
sun never sets on former campers that accepted the call to serve their
Lord at Camp Marietta. Missionaries, pastors, and many others are scattered
around the world that can trace their roots back to what W.B.
and Grace Simmons dreamt
